The Toronto Maple Leafs are laden with talent. Mitch Marner, Austin Matthews, William Nylander, and John Tavares provide a lot of scoring punch. Then they have guys like Morgan Rielly, Jake Muzzin, and the young Rasmus Sandin shoring up the back end. Let’s not forget about Jack Campbell who continues to shine between the pipes.
It’s too bad the franchise is so cursed. While they have made a lot of good moves over the past several years, the Leafs just can’t seem to succeed when it matters. They have eased their way into the playoffs in each of the past 5 years, but they haven’t made it out of the first round. In fact, Toronto hasn’t made it past the first round since 2003-04.
Current Odds on Winning the Stanley Cup
Right now, they are priced at +1000 to win the Stanley Cup. That number isn’t very palatable considering Toronto’s rich history of failure. Let’s put those Stanley Cup dreams aside and look at the Leafs’ chances of winning the Atlantic Division. As it stands, oddsmakers have Toronto favoured to win it. The Leafs are listed at +150 to win the division. The Florida Panthers are next at +275 while the Bruins chime in at +300. The Tampa Bay Lightning, who are looking for their third consecutive Stanley Cup championship, are set at +500 to finish first in the Atlantic Division.

The season is young with most teams having played only about a dozen games. Toronto’s mediocre 7-5-1 record has them currently sitting in fourth place in the Atlantic behind Tampa, Detroit, and the red-hot Florida Panthers. This is actually quite an achievement considering how the Buds opened the season with just a single win in their first six games. They have since gone on a bit of a tear including a recent 5-game winning streak that saw them notch victories over division rivals like Detroit, Boston, and even Tampa Bay.
Again, it’s early, but it seems like the Leafs’ odds to win the division should be a bit longer. This isn’t the North Division. The Atlantic Division has no fewer than three other teams with a legitimate shot of winning it all. There simply isn’t a lot of value in wagering on them at +150 to win their division. At +500, the Bolts are appealing as are the Panthers who are listed at +275. Even the Bruins at +300 provide a bit of value. But +150 on a team that has never finished above third place in the 7-year history of the Atlantic Division? It just doesn’t make sense.
Can the Maple Leafs Make the Next Step This Postseason
Toronto will more than likely go to the postseason for the sixth year in a row. It’s possible that the Leafs take the next step by advancing to the second round. They might even go all the way and bring Canada its first Stanley Cup since the Habs won it in 1993. However, doing it as the number-one seed in the Atlantic Division seems highly unlikely despite the short odds. There is simply too much competition to justify the price.
