Toronto has actually beaten Boston in the 1st meeting of the season quite easily 115-83, but since then the Celtics were able to win both meetings, including the one played in Toronto 109-97 back in late November.
Both teams have improved significantly since then and the Raptors find themselves in 6th place in the Eastern Conference standings, having overtaken the Cleveland Cavaliers with their latest win at Indiana a couple of nights ago 131-91.
The game was never really in doubt as the Raptors led by 20 after the first quarter, so none of the starters played more than 31 minutes which is a good sign as they take on one of the hottest teams in the league. Toronto has covered the spread in 8 of 10 games, they’ve also won 8 of those. However, against the Celtics at home they’ve failed to cover the spread in 8 straight which is a bit concerning.
Boston Celtics
After destroying the Minnesota Timberwolves 134-112 at home last night, the Boston Celtics now have sole possession of the number 1 seed in the Eastern Conference which is a staggering achievement for a team that was mediocre at best for the first couple of months of the season.
Jayson Tatum is on one of the best stretches of his career, last night he finished with 34 points to lead the way, but still he isn’t getting enough love in the MVP conversation. He won’t be bothered by that too much though, as long as his team continues winning.
The Celtics are 6-1 SU in the last 7 meetings with Toronto and 5-0 SU in their last 5 on the road overall. Tonight they’ll be without Al Horford though who is out due to personal reasons. For some reason the injury report has Tatum listed as well and the official reason is “rest” so I’m not sure if he will suit up here.
That would be a big blow for the Celtics if Tatum doesn’t play, so I’d recommend waiting for the injury report before making any bets here. Let’s assume he plays though, the Celtics have been the most dominant team in the last 2 months and you rarely get an opportunity to back them as the underdog. Take the road team to cover here.
