The 76ers struggled a lot more than people thought they would last night as it took them an extra overtime session to take care of the struggling Orlando Magic 116-114 on the road.
It wasn’t the best of shooting nights for the dynamic duo of Embiid and Harden as they combined to shoot just 14-for-47 from the field, but they were able to connect on 28 of 32 free throw attempts.
As a team the Sixers shot just 38% from the field, that’s not going to be enough if it happens again tonight against the Nuggets. Since the big trade went down Philly ranks only 16th in offensive rating, so despite them putting up almost 120 points per game with the Beard they aren’t exactly being very efficient.
I’m looking forward to seeing how they respond here as this game could very well decide the outcome of the MVP race for this season.
Denver Nuggets
Nikola Jokic is often overlooked in that conversation despite putting up historic numbers of 26.1 points, 13.8 rebounds and 8.1 assists per game, while leading his team in almost every important statistical category.
He’s doing all that with the likes of Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. being out for most of the season. Denver has suffered 2 losses in a row which is concerning as the lead has now shrunk to just 1.5 games ahead of Minnesota for the 6th seed in the Western Conference.
They come into tonight’s game as 2.5-point underdogs which isn’t necessarily bad considering they are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 such games. When it comes to road games this team has covered the spread in 6 of their last 7, so I wouldn’t be so quick to write them off here.
Despite the solid start in the James Harden era I am remaining skeptical as they seem to beat only the weak teams, but whenever someone tough comes along they struggle. Denver’s defense will be on a different level compared to the one they faced in Orlando last night and until they start beating teams from the upper tier I’m going against them. These 2 teams rank in the bottom 10 when it comes to pace of play this season. The Nuggets average only 99.7 possessions per game while Philadelphia is only 28th with 98.3 per game. Although getting Harden has resulted in an increase of points on both ends for them, I think tonight’s game could see a drop off in production for the simple fact that Denver’s defence has been very solid all year long.
They are allowing just 107.5 points per game on the road which is 9th in the entire NBA. Although they scored 116 vs Orlando, the 76ers seem to be struggling to adapt to life with James Harden at the point.
They shot just 38% in that game and having no rest in between games here I think that’ll result in lower scoring output. In their last 5 games without rest the under has cashed 4 times, that’s a good recipe for backing the under in tonight’s game, so let’s go with that.
