I know it’s a small sample size as we are only entering week 2 of the new NBA season, but the New Orleans Pelicans have exceeded expectations so far winning 2 of their first 3 games. And it’s not only the fact that they are winning, but it’s the fashion in which they are doing so. This team is putting up a ton of points on everyone that comes their way which is proving to be the winning formula. However, they did fall short at home in their last game against Utah 122-121 after overtime.
And what’s even worse is that star players Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram both suffered injuries in that game which could be problematic moving forward. Zion is listed as questionable here with a hip contusion, while Ingram is going to sit out as he enters the NBA concussion protocols. That’s a big blow to the Pelicans ambitions here as now they only have C.J. McCollum to rely on offensively. They’ve had their fair share of issues in games vs Dallas winning only twice in the last 10 meetings and covering the spread just 3 times in the last 10 head-to-head.
Dallas Mavericks
Luka Doncic and the Mavs don’t have any significant injuries at the moment. The only two players that could miss tonight’s game are Frank Ntilikina and Davis Bertans, but the way the Mavs are currently constructed that shouldn’t be a problem. Doncic is putting up really solid numbers through 3 games and is also getting a ton of help off the bench from newly signed Christian Wood who is proving to be a worthy sidekick for the MVP candidate.
Dallas is coming off a 41-point blowout win over the Memphis Grizzlies in what was their home opener. The game was pretty much in the books after the first 12 minutes as Dallas jumped out to a 22 point lead. They held Memphis to just 43% shooting from the field and 27% from three, that kind of effort will bring Dallas a ton of success this season, but the question is can they sustain it? This team needs to fix their road form if they were to have any success this season. They are just 1-7 SU in their last 8 away from home.
It’s never good when injuries impact a result, but it’s hard for me to consider backing the Pelicans here with two key players potentially missing the game. Luka is in hot form and I think he carries Dallas to another impressive win on the road. Take the road squad here.

Scoring has not been a problem for Dallas in head-to-head meetings, they are averaging a whopping 120.9 points per game in the last 10 played. The Pelicans will have to work on that tonight as they’ve been putting up just 107.7 per game during that stretch, but the encouraging sign is their offense through 3 games as they’re 2nd in the NBA with 125 points per game. A large portion of those points usually gets scored by Zion and Ingram, but this team has a lot of depth and other players will step up to compensate for their absence.
C.J. McCollum has been impressive so far this season averaging his usual 23.3 points per game. He is coming off a 28-point effort against Utah, look for him to finally break the 30 point barrier tonight as he takes a bigger responsibility on offense. The total has gone over in 7 of 8 games for the Pelicans and in 5 of their last 6 vs Western Conference teams. If we combine that with the over going 12-6 in the last 18 vs Dallas, I think it’s safe to say there will be a lot of points scored in tonight’s game. Back the over.
