Minnesota Timberwolves

Minnesota TimberwolvesJust when we thought the Minnesota Timberwolves were going to embark on a long win streak, they were brought back to Earth by the Pelicans and Grizzlies. However, they are still in a decent spot mid-way through January occupying 9th place in the Western Conference standings, just a half game back of the LA Lakers and 7th place. The big 3 of Anthony Edwards, D’Angelo Russel and Karl Anthony Towns combined for 84 points in the loss at Memphis, which is an encouraging sign for the 3rd youngest roster in the entire league. One key issue they’ll have to sort before the trade deadline is their three point shooting as they rank only 22nd in the NBA scoring on just 34% of their attempts. At home they have a positive record of 11 wins in 20 games, however against the spread they’ve gone just 9-12 in 21 games so far.

Golden State Warriors

Golden State WarriorsThe Warriors are back on track after losing 2 straight with an impressive 42-point win at Chicago 2 nights ago. The injury to Zach LaVine might have helped a bit, but it was a statement performance in a game in which they were without Draymond Green and Klay Thompson. The sharp shooter might come back tonight, but the Warriors will be without Steph Curry for this one as he has a hand issue. With just 1 win in their last 7 visits to Minnesota, the Warriors aren’t in a good spot heading into this one. They’ve also just covered once in 5 road games and in their last 7 overall their record is 2-5 ATS. Players like Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins will once again have to fill in the voids left by the absences of their star players.

With 2 of 3 stars missing in action, I doubt the Warriors can pull off another performance like they had in Chicago the other night. Minnesota has owned them in recent head-to-head meetings at home, the young Wolves stars will be hungry to get an important win here which should bump them up in the West standings a bit. Go with the home side to cover.

With Curry out of the line-up we’ve seen the Warriors struggle quite a bit on the offensive end this season. If we disregard the game vs Chicago, in their last 5 games they’ve averaged just 96.2 points per game. Klay Thompson will give them a nice boost, but it’s still unclear if he will play tonight. The total has gone under in 4 of their last 6 games and for the season they are 8-13 on the O/U on the road. Minnesota has also trended towards the under a bit more often at home than on the road. Their record reads 7-14 through 21 games played, with the last 4 of 5 games cashing on that bet. One major factor why that is happening is their play on the defensive end. At Target Center they are holding teams to 104.1 points per game, compared to 114.6 per game on the road. Against a heavily shorthanded Golden State team I expect them to hold their opponent to under 100 points. If that’s the case then backing the under is a must here.
