The saga around Ja Morant continues and Memphis is currently on a free fall in the standings, dropping to 3rd place after their most recent loss to the Lakers 112-103. The latest news on their best player isn’t good at all, he was removed from the team and will miss the next 4 games at least, until the NBA finishes it’s own investigation on the incident.
There’s no doubt about it that without him they’re a completely different team, even against a Golden State squad that is only 7-25 SU on the road they’re now 2-point underdogs. Steven Adams is also out with an injury, so far in 2023 they’ve gone 7-11 SU in 18 games without him. It’s not all negative though, in games played at FedEx Forum they’re still 26-5 SU this season which should give them a glimmer of hope ahead of tonight’s game.
Golden State Warriors
Despite getting 40 points from Steph Curry the Warriors once again fell on the road. Despite knocking down 20 threes and shooting almost 53% from the field, the OKC Thunder beat them 137-128 on Tuesday. The defense just isn’t the same on the road, only the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets have worse defensive ratings in away games this season.
To top it off they’ll once again be without Andrew Wiggins and Gary Payton II, but Kevon Looney and Jonathan Kuminga should be ready to play. Golden State has beaten Memphis 5 times in the last 6 meetings, however covering the spread on the road has been a challenge all year long. They’re just 9-23 ATS in those games and currently on a run of 7 straight without doing so.
I still like the defending champions here, despite all their negative records in away games. Memphis without Morant is a sub-500 team and we’ll see them drop yet another game tonight. Back the Warriors as slight favorites.
