San Antonio Spur

San Antonio SpursTurns out losing Jakob Poeltl took a bigger toll on the San Antonio Spurs than we initially thought. The Spurs missed his scoring (he averages almost 14 points per game this season), but rebounding has become a major issue all of a sudden as well. In the latest defeat against the Dallas Mavericks they were outrebounded 48-41 which ultimately made the difference as Dallas won 123-109. The defense also struggled as they allowed 46% shooting from the field, while on offense the team simply wasn’t aggressive enough as they forced the Mavs to commit just 5 fouls compared to their 17 fouls on the night. All in all, it was a tough loss for San Antonio and it doesn’t get any easier tonight as they face an opponent they’ve beaten only once in the last 7 attempts.

Los Angeles Lakers

Los Angeles Lakers 1The Lakers have also had their struggles lately, but those can be explained by their best player and a few key role players being out with injuries. LeBron is still not yet fully recovered and is likely going to miss tonight’s game as well. In his absence Anthony Davis is the team’s leading scorer with 23.8 points, while Russell Westbrook is doing his part averaging close to a triple-double. Lakers have won 2 out of 3 games, however bettors haven’t had much success with them against the spread. LA is only 4-12 ATS in their last 16 games and they’ve covered the spread just twice in their last 7 games. They did receive some good news ahead of tonight’s game and that is the recovery is Talen Horton-Tucker is on point and he could make his season debut in this one.

Spurs play a more team oriented style of basketball while the Lakers currently rely on Davis and Westbrook to dominate, without any real concept in place either on attack or defense. But, it has worked over the past 3 games and with them playing at home here I think they should have enough to bounce back from their loss against Minnesota. Give me the Lakers to cover.

LA Lakers -2.5 Point Spread is available at -110 odds on bet365

After consecutive games of 120+ points against the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat, the Lakers had a stinker against the Minnesota Timberwolves with just 83 points. Davis and Westbrook both had 20 or more, but the rest of the team just couldn’t buy a bucket, especially from three-point land as they finished with just 9 makes from 41 attempts. I doubt that’ll happen to them two games in a row. Tonight they are going up against a defense that’s allowed 117 and 123 points over their last two games. San Antonio plays at the 4th fastest pace in the NBA, while the Lakers are number 1 in that category averaging 104.8 possessions per game. Neither of them excels on the defensive end and with this being an early tip-off I think they’ll want to put on a show for the fans at Staples. The O/U for their last 3 games head-to-head reads 2-1 in favor of the Over and they’ve combined for 228.3 points in those games. I’ll be backing the Over in this one.
