Less than 24 hours after their surprising win against the Lakers, the Minnesota Timberwolves will try to follow it up with another stellar performance against their cross-town rivals the Clippers. The Wolves played an impressive game all around. After trailing by 5 points at the break they came out in a different gear in the 3rd quarter and won it by 40-12, the Lakers just couldn’t recover. Karl-Anthony Towns had 29 points, while his point-guard D’Angelo Russell added 22. Anthony Edwards, who had a career high 48 points in the game prior to this one, had just 9 points on the night, but it didn’t matter in the end thankfully. The win stops the bleeding only temporarily though, now Minnesota faces a team that’s beaten them already twice this season.
Los Angeles Clippers
LA won those two games by 11 and 20 points, they were both played in midst of the current 6-game win streak they are on. Their latest victim was the Miami Heat on Thursday as they won by 3-points at home. Three players scored 20+ points, led by Paul George who had 27 on the night as he continues to put up MVP numbers on a nightly basis. One odd stat that jumps out about this team is they struggle vs teams who have a win record of 40% or lower. In their last 7 such games they’ve covered the spread just twice. However, this doesn’t seem to apply to the Timberwolves against whom they’ve covered in 7 of the last 10 meetings and have beaten them in 8 of those games.
If you showed someone last night’s Minnesota win over the Lakers, without them knowing just how bad this team is on most night, they would think the Wolves are a contender. Sadly for them though, nights like that happen rarely and I can’t see them replicating that against one of the hottest teams this season, especially not after they beat them fairly easily both times they played this season already. Prior to last night’s game against the Lakers the Timberwolves were giving up 118.6 points per game on the road, that stat has improved quite a bit after the 87 points the Lakers put up. This wasn’t no miracle defensive strategy used by the Timberwolves, the Lakers just had an off night and couldn’t buy a bucket. At this stage of the season the Clippers are a well oiled machine and are scoring at 108.3 points per game while playing elite defense. Minnesota does put up 112 points per game on the road, but the last time they faced this Clippers team they managed only 84 on their home court. It’s also worth pointing out that 12 of the last 16 Minnesota games have all finished under the total, including 4 of their last 5 on the road against the Clippers. Two of the three meetings last season between them also finished under the total and the two teams combined for just 219.3 points in those three games. I think we’ll see a Clippers win here, with them keeping the Timberwolves somewhere in the 95-100 points range. Let’s back the under.
