It looks like the Blazers have finally started to turn things around, at least we hope so. They’ve beaten the Pacers and Lakers in consecutive games on their home floor, but now they hit the road where they are 0-4 this season and have a -13.8 net rating. Blazers fans can finally relax regarding Damian Lillard who finally had an efficient shooting night against the Lakers with 25 points, compensating for C.J. McCollum’s 7 points on 3-for-15 shooting. This teams offensive firepower has never been in doubt, it’s the defense that needs cleaning up. They have one of the worst defensive numbers giving up 9 more points per possession above the league average. Against the Clippers they’ve won just 3 times in the last 10 meetings, so tonight’s game will be a true test of character.
LA Clippers
Unlike their cross-town rivals, the Clippers are actually on a roll having won 4-games on the bounce beating Oklahoma City, Minnesota (twice) and Charlotte. Paul George is putting up MVP type numbers yet again with 27 points per game on 46.4% shooting and as a result has been voted as Western Conference player of the week. He’s also getting a ton of help this time around, in their latest win over the Hornets there were 6 players that finished in double-figures. They could be a bit shorthanded tonight though as Marcus Morris is questionable with a minor knee injury. Clippers are an impressive 5-0 ATS in their last 5 home games against Portland.
These two teams are very similar with one major difference between them and that is defense. Clippers are 2nd in the NBA in defensive efficiency, while the Blazers are down all the way to 16th. Portland generally likes to push the pace in their games, right now they are 4th in the NBA averaging 102 possessions per game. As noted earlier their defense hasn’t been all that impressive this season. They allow 109.2 points per game, but on the road that number jumps up to 115.2 per game which is one of the five worst marks in the entire NBA. The Clippers do hold their opponents to under 100 points on average at home, but this Blazers team is talented enough to break that mark in my opinion. PG13 and co. are also in solid form when it comes to scoring, they’ve averaged 116.6 points in their last three games, surely they can reach that number against one of the worst defenses in the league. These two teams have combined for 226 points per game in their last 10 meetings, I’m expecting a similar scenario tonight and whoever can make more threes will come out on top.
