Los Angeles Lakers

I keep asking myself what does LeBron James have to do to get these Lakers a win. Just a couple of days shy of his 37th birthday, James is averaging 28.9 points, 8.5 rebounds and 6.3 assists on 55% shooting from the field during the month of December and yet the Lakers can’t beat anyone. They’re coming off a 122-115 home loss on Christmas Day against the Brooklyn Nets, it was the 2nd game in a row in which they’ve allowed 122+ points. LeBron got some help from Russell Westbrook who finished the game with a triple-double, however he turned the ball over 3 times and went 4-for-20 from the field. Anthony Davis won’t be back at least until late January, if the Lakers don’t start winning soon they could find themselves outside of the playoff picture in the highly competitive Western Conference.

Houston Rockets

The Rockets don’t have such issues, they know this season is all about growth and finishing as high as possible for next year’s NBA draft. They are coming back home from a 1-4 road trip after losing 4 in a row and 8 of their last 10 overall. This will be a 2nd game in 2 nights for them following their 123-99 loss at Charlotte last night. They managed to score just 99 points in that game while shooting 41%, leading scorer Christian Wood finished with a modest 16 points. One thing this team doesn’t have to worry about is health and safety protocols. They are one of the rare teams left unaffected by the recent covid outbreak. The only player out with an injury is D.J. Augustin who has a quad issue. The Rockets are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 and have won just 1 of those 7 games.

Losing to the Rockets would be a new low point in the Lakers season. I don’t think LeBron James will allow that. The King is putting up MVP numbers, I expect him and Russell Westbrook to show up here. Russ is playing his old team and he will be extra motivated to show they made a mistake when trading him away. Give me the Lakers to cover here.

Lakers -6 Point Spread is available at -110 odds on bet365

The line has been set at 228.5 points for this one, a bit too high if you ask me. Sure, the Lakers defense has allowed a ton of points in their last 5 games, but on the road this season they are 6-8 on the O/U. In fact, the under has landed in 7 of their last 10 overall and in 5 of their last 6 on the road. This has also been the case in their last 5 visits to Toyota Center. The last 10 meetings head-to-head have averaged just 217.5 points per game with the O/U going 3-7 during that stretch. Only 4 teams have put up worse offensive numbers than the Rockets over their past 3 games. Houston is averaging just 103.7 per game in those 3 games and they’ve faced fairly mediocre defensive teams in 2 of those 3 games. Neither teams is capable of scoring consistently from the three point line, so I think the smart play would be to go under the total in this one.
