Golden State Warriors
It’s been a rather slow start to the new season by the defending champions as they’ve split their opening 4 games. They are coming off a 29-point loss on the road against the Phoenix Suns, which should be a wake-up call for them as they are already slipping in the West standings. Thankfully it’s still early in the season though, so there is plenty of time to turn things around. One of the reasons they lost by so much was the fact that Klay Thompson got ejected in the 3rd quarter after a scuffle with Devin Booker.
Not having their 2nd best scorer proved to be too much for Golden State as they threw in the towel shortly after that happened. Now they have a chance to bounce back in front of the home fans, in 3 games played at Chase Center they are 2-1 on the season and against the Heat they are 7-1 SU in the last 8 meetings played in the Bay.
The Heat got a lucky break in their last game against Portland as Damian Lillard went down with a groin injury mid-way through the 3rd quarter which made their life so much easier. They ended up winning 119-98 in what was their 1st road game of the season. All 5 starters scored in double figures, while Bam Adebayo finished with 18 points to lead a balanced attack. All but one player (Udonis Haslem) who touched the floor for Miami was able to score in that game.
That means that no starter played more than 29 minutes in the win which could be crucial in tonight’s game as they’ve managed to stay fresh. They’ll need all the advantages they can get in order to beat the Warriors. From a betting perspective they have been able to cover the spread 6 times in the last 8 head-to-head, but their record of just 5 wins in the last 16 meetings is concerning. It’s unclear whether or not Victor Oladipo will play here, he is listed as questionable with a knee issue.
The Warriors are favored by 7.5 points here, I think that is a bit extreme as in the last 10 meetings they are outscoring the Heat by just 3.9 points per game. Last season’s meeting at Chase Center was decided by 7 points, I think the Heat have enough to keep this game close, so let’s back them to cover here.
Golden State Warriors vs Miami Heat Predictions & Odds
The 2 regular season meetings last year finished with 222 and 223 points, which is below tonight’s projected total of 225.5 points. If we are to go by the start of the season, both teams have played slowly to tip things off. Miami ranks just 18th averaging 99.2 possessions per game, while the Warriors are further down in 22nd averaging 97.4 per game. That should play into the Heat’s hand as they prefer to slow things down, because offensively they just aren’t equipped to run with teams.
Golden State’s defense has been sub-par through 4 games and head coach Steve Kerr will have to find ways to motivate them to start playing better on that end. Their defensive efficiency ranks only 20th, which is a significant drop-off from last year when they were ranked 2nd. They could learn a thing or two from Miami as the Heat currently rank in the top 10 for both opponent field goal attempts and percentage. Expect the road team to slow things down here which should lead to less scoring opportunities for both sides. Go with the under.
