Brooklyn Nets

Brooklyn NetsThe big news ahead of this game has to be James Harden sitting this one out to rest his body, leaving the Nets with just one superstar to deal with the 4-21 Pistons. That superstar is Kevin Durant who had 31 points and 6 assists in the 113-105 win at Atlanta the other night, he was also the main reason why the Nets beat the Pistons last time out 96-90 as he dropped 29 points on them. Just like Harden, KD took the night off against the Houston Rockets mid-week and Brooklyn couldn’t handle his absence, so it’ll be interesting to see how they cope with the absence of the Beard tonight. Nets are 15-5 SU in their last 20 games and have won 7 of 8 on the road. In head-to-head meetings vs Detroit they are 6-1 SU in the last 7, however they’ve covered only once in their last 5 trips to the Motor City.

Detroit Pistons

Detroit PistonsDetroit is in all kinds of trouble right now with 11 losses in a row. Five of those came at home where they are only 2-10 on the season so far. It’s pretty clear this team is in a rebuilding phase and is focused on developing their young players. Rookie Cade Cunningham has had some decent stat lines lately, but he is still shooting only 37% from the field this season, so that’s one are he will need to work on moving forward. With Jerami Grant injuring his thumb and being out for an extended period of time, Cunningham will have to up his responsibility on both ends of the floor. Detroit has really struggled lately, they’ve lost their last 4 of 5 games by 16, 11, 11 and 18 points.

Brooklyn hasn’t covered as often as they would have liked vs Detroit, but they are playing a side that’s without their 20 point per game scorer and best player here. Sure, Harden isn’t playing, but the Nets have enough quality replacements to compensate for that. Give me the road team here.

Nets -8.5 Point Spread is available at -110 odds on bet365

It wasn’t the prettiest of games last time these two teams played. Only 186 points were scored as the Nets came out on top by 6 in Detroit. It was the 2nd time in the last 3 meetings the total went under and the two teams have averaged 206 points between them. Pistons are coming off just a 93 point effort at New Orleans and with the news of Jerami Grant not being able to play that’s a big blow to their ambitions on the offensive end as he accounts for 20 points of their 99.5 per game. That’s the 2nd lowest average of all teams in the league, only the OKC Thunder score less on average. In their last 3 games the Nets have averaged 106.3 per game and with James Harden sitting this one out, I don’t think they’ll struggle, but his absence will be felt as he handles the ball most of the time on offense for them. All in all I think backing the under is the wise choice here.
