Miami Heat

Miami HeatAfter their unexpected 17-point home loss against the Boston Celtics, the Miami Heat have recovered well by beating the Utah Jazz at home 118-115. The loss to Boston seems to have been just a fluke as things quickly returned to normal. Kyle Lowry had a triple-double, Jimmy Butler had 27 points and Tyler Herro once again had a big night off the bench with 29 points. Miami is currently winning games by a +11.4 margin and they are doing so while being dominant defensively. It’ll be interesting to see how they do against the Nuggets tonight, in their last 10 against them they have just 3 wins.

Denver Nuggets

Denver NuggetsDenver is also coming off a win, but it was a modest 95-94 triumph over the young and inexperienced Houston Rockets at home. Nikola Jokic remains the only consistent threat on offense, he led the way with 28 points and just one other Nuggets player scored in double figures. This team is missing Jamal Murray badly and to make matters worse Michael Porter Jr. is also questionable with a lower back injury. Jeff Green is likely to get minutes in his absence, but at this stage of his career he is hardly an upgrade over him. Denver has a tough time covering the spread, they’ve done so only 3 times in their last 13 games. Following wins they are just 1-3 ATS this season.

Despite the poor record head-to-head, this Miami team is completely different than the one we saw the last couple of seasons. They seem to have no weakness at this time, I wouldn’t be surprised if they finished the year as the number 1 seed in the East the way they are playing. Denver has been hit with the injury bug hard and until they recover I’m betting against them. Back Miami to cover here.

Looking at the total here, it’s been set at a very modest 205.5 points. In their last 10 games head-to-head these two teams average a combined 215.2 points per game, that stat alone is hard to ignore. Sure, they are 3rd and 5th in defensive efficiency, but so were the Heat and Jazz and their game finished Over 230 points. Miami also scores the 3rd most points in away games this season at 112.8 per contest. Looking at the individual match-ups, Jokic should have the upper hand on Bam Adebayo on the inside and if that’s the case he should get everyone else involved too with his assists. The Nuggets haven’t really played up to their potential just yet, so this is a perfect opportunity for a statement game against one of the top teams in the East. Give me the over on the total.
