With the Bucks and Sixers game out East, I am actually surprised this game is getting so much coverage, especially since there’s a good chance we might not see LeBron James play. The Mavericks won’t mind it though, they are on a roll right now with 11 wins in their last 15 games and against the Lakers they’ve won 10 of 15 home games as well.
The play of Luka Doncic will once again be critical for them, he leads the team in almost every meaningful statistical category this season. He’s averaging almost 28 points, 9.1 rebounds and 8.5 assists per game.
With their latest win over Utah they’ve now taken over the 4th seed in the West which would give them home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Keeping it won’t be easy though, so they’ll need to continue winning against a Lakers side that’s currently struggling would be a solid start.
Los Angeles Lakers
LA comes into this one after a tough loss at New Orleans 116-108, their 3rd in 4 games and now the San Antonio Spurs are just half a game behind them for the 10th seed and the final play-in tournament spot.
To make matters worse, LeBron James twisted his ankle in that game and although he played a solid game and finished with 39 points, he is officially listed as doubtful for tonight’s clash. Even if he does play, the Lakers are in real trouble here as they’ve won just 5 of their last 20 games and have failed to cover the spread in 5 straight against Western Conference opponents.
On the road in their last 15 games they have just 2 wins and joins LeBron on the sidelines could be Dwight Howard who is listed as questionable with a hip injury. It’s not all bad news for LA though, Anthony Davis is ramping up his work and could make a comeback sometime next week.
The Mavericks are really reliable when it comes to covering the spread at home this season with a 21-16-1 ATS record. Against a shorthanded Lakers squad they should have enough to get the job done, so let’s back them to cover.
