Beating the defending champs doesn’t happen often if you are the Washington Wizards, but they did just that last time they played at home. It finished 101-94 in what was a stellar defensive effort from the home team. They held the Bucks to under 40% shooting and just 27% from the three-point line. Unlike in previous years, this time around Washington values the defensive end much more and it’s paid off for them so far. Star player Bradley Beal has slowly gotten his groove back and is now a nightly 30-point threat. This team is playing well on both ends of the court and if they can keep this up, I wouldn’t be surprised if they finished as one of the Top 4 teams in the East this season.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Cleveland celebrated a massive and unlikely win as well last time they played. They went into Madison Square Garden with a lot of people counting them out, but the Cavs proved everyone wrong. Ricky Rubio went nuts and connected on 8 of 9 shots from three-point land for 37 points off the bench. As a team the Cavs finished the night 19-for-35 from deep and when you shoot like that the opponent doesn’t really stand much of a chance. However, the celebrations were short lived as they received some bad injury news after the game. Starting guard Collin Sexton left the game during the 3rd quarter because of a knee injury, it was later revealed he would he tore his meniscus and is likely done for the season.
It’s always tough losing your starting shooting guard, especially if he is a 20-point per game scorer and one of your primary ball handlers. It will take some time for them bounce back and this is why I like the Wizards tonight. Against the Knicks, the Cavaliers went just crazy from the three-point line which doesn’t happen often for this team. Looking at their last nine games, the total has finished under in 7 of those. Now they lose a 20 point per game scorer and with such a young roster on their hands it’ll be tough to replace someone like that. I highly doubt they can expect Rubio to give them 30+ points off the bench on a nightly basis. Washington games in November have also been profitable when betting on the under with 4 of the last 5 cashing. Two of the last 3 most recent meetings between these two teams also finished under the total, I think with both teams being hit with the injury bug so hard we’ll see yet another defensive minded approach from both which would hopefully result in a lower score.
