We normally aren’t used to seeing the Cavs lose to teams like the Detroit Pistons or the Minnesota Timberwolves, but those 2 teams have beaten them by 5 and 3 points over the past 7 days.
However, they can make things better with a win tonight against a Charlotte Hornets side they’ve beaten 3 times already this season. The last 2 games were pretty close though with them being decided by just 1 and 3 points.
What should worry Cavs fans though is the fact that they are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games and against Eastern Conference teams they’ve covered the spread just once in 5 outings. Point guard and best player Darius Garland is also questionable with a back issue, without him it could be another troublesome game.
Charlotte Hornets
The Hornets will also be without one of their key players as Gordon Hayward continues missing games with an ankle injury. His absence has been noticeable for Michael Jordan’s team as they are just 2-6 in the 8 games he has missed this season.
This team has dropped 2 in a row, just like the Cavs they lost to Detroit at home on a buzzer beater in overtime and then they followed it up with a 24 point blowout loss at the hands of the defending champions.
With just 2 wins over their last 11 games they’ve slipped all the way to 9th place in the East and they are currently tied with Atlanta, while the Washington Wizards are lurking with just 1 game behind them. The good news is they’ve performed well against the spread on the road lately going 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13, but against the Cavaliers they’ve won just 6 times in the last 20 meetings.
Cavs are 19-10 SU at home this season, they’ve also covered the spread in 18 of those 29 games so I think they should have enough against this shorthanded Charlotte team. Charlotte has also cooled off a bit scoring wise lately, their last 9 of 13 games have all gone under the total, which is a bit surprising for a team that was top of the scoring charts for most of the first 3 months of the season.
This team tends to struggle against elite defenses, they scored just 106 at Milwaukee the other day, I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the amount they score tonight as well. The last time they faced Cleveland they were able to put up just 101 on the board and with the last 10 meetings averaging just 214.2 points per game between them, I think it would be wise to back the under in this one.
