Charlotte Hornets

Charlotte HornetsLast night the Hornets played the role of party poopers as they spoiled the home debut of Kyrie Irving by beating his Brooklyn Nets 119-110 at Barclays Center. It was a well balanced effort, especially on offence by the Hornets who got 33 points from LaMelo Ball, 24 from Miles Bridges and 18 from P.J. Washington.

As a team they shot 53.1% from three-point line and that was what ultimately decided the game as Brooklyn was able to hit just 7 of 34 attempts from beyond-the-arc. With the win the Hornets are now actually 8th in the East having overtaken Brooklyn based on winning the regular season series. They’ve now won 7 of their last 10 games overall and host Denver in hopes of sweeping the season series having already won the 1st meeting played in Ball Arena back in late December.

Denver Nuggets

Denver NuggetsDenver is coming off a much needed 113-107 home win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, they are now 1.5 games ahead of the 7th seeded Minnesota Timberwolves and control their own faith when it comes to finishing 6th in the West.

Nikola Jokic played yet another outstanding game with 35 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists while shooting 13-for-15 from the field. Aaron Gordon also stepped up his game with 20 points, while Will Barton chipped in with 20 of his own.

Nuggets are 7-1 SU in their last 8 games on the road and they’ve beaten the Hornets in 5 of the last 6 meetings. However, playing them on the road hasn’t been kind to them as they’ve failed to cover the spread in 5 straight games at the Spectrum Center.

Having played last night in Brooklyn, the Hornets have the disadvantage of travel here so that could be a deciding factor. The Nuggets had an extra day of rest, combine that with the fact that nobody on the Hornets roster is capable of matching-up with Jokic, I think backing the road team has more upside here. Take the Nuggets.

Charlotte Hornets vs Denver Nuggets Predictions & Odds

Although the first meeting of the season produced 222 points, the projected total has been set at 231.5 points here and I’m just not sure if we’ll see that many points. Charlotte is playing a 2nd night of a back-to-back so there could be some signs of fatigue as we are very close to the end of the regular season.

The Hornets have gone under the total in 4 of their last 6 games and for the season they are just 17-20-1 on the O/U in home games. Denver’s road record on the O/U is pretty much even at 19-18-1 and their previous game had a modest 220 points against the OKC Thunder.

This team is smart enough to know that they cannot win this game if they decide to run with the Hornets. Right now they rank just 22nd in the NBA in the pace of play, I think it’s time for us to see their defence on full display as they’ll need it in the playoffs if they want to make a deep run. The last 4 Hornets games have all had less than 231.5 points, so that’s another encouraging sign for our bet here. Let’s back the under.
