New York hasn’t been as consistent lately, they’ve exchanged wins and losses in their last 5 games and are coming off a 112-100 home defeat against the Milwaukee Bucks. Only one Knick starter scored in double figures and that was Julius Randle who finished the game with 16 points. Derrick Rose had 22 off the bench, but it simply wasn’t enough as New York wasn’t able to get stops down the stretch and the Bucks pulled away late. The biggest issue for Tom Thibodeau’s team this season has been defense, they’ve fallen all the way down to 22nd in points allowed per game, last season they were the best team in the league in that category. They do get a decent bounce back opportunity here, however they’ve won just once in their last 13 visits to Charlotte.
Charlotte Hornets
The Hornets have been a big disappointment since November started, they went on a 5-game losing streak and ruined everything good they’ve done so far this season. They did managed to stop the bleeding last night with a win at Memphis 118-108. Kelly Oubre Jr. led the way with 37 points for their 6th win on the new season. Of course, one good game doesn’t mean all of their issues have been fixed. They still allow the most points in the NBA at 117.5 per game and opponents shoot 47.4% against them from the field. They’ve covered the spread just once in their last 6 games overall and are only 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games against teams from the Atlantic Division.
The Knicks have been a lot better on the road than at home this season with a 5-1 record over their first 6 games. There’s reasons to be optimistic going into tonight’s game, in their last two wins opponents have managed only 97 points against them, if they can get stops when it matters down the they’ll be in a good position here. As we said earlier this will be a meeting of the 22nd and 30th ranked teams when it comes to points allowed per game. Not only that, but this will also be a game between the 2nd highest and 7th highest scoring teams as well. The Hornets average 114.5 points per game, at home that goes up to a whopping 121.8 per game. The Knicks aren’t far behind at 110.8 per game, with the number going slightly up on the road to 111.2 per game. Charlotte’s last 10 of 14 games have cashed on the over, including 5 of their last 6 played at home. The status of Nerlens Noel is still up in the air for this one, if he’s unable to go the Knicks will lose a bit on their inside presence and shot blocking, so that too will have an impact on scoring here. Everything points to a high scoring game here, so the wise thing would be to back the over.
