The biggest worry for Celtics fans ahead of tonight’s game is the status of Jaylen Brown who injured his ankle in the 107-98 win over the Atlanta Hawks on Monday. The extent of Brown’s injury is still unknown, but he has been listed as out for tonight’s game which in part why the Celtics come into the game as 3-point underdogs.
They haven’t faired well in that role this season winning only 5 of their 18 games, however they do have a very good head-to-head record against the Grizzlies winning 9 of the last 10 games, which is one reason to be optimistic.
Jayson Tatum had another 30-point game in the win over the Hawks, he will be the main offensive weapon for Boston in this one. The Celtics are 7-0 SU in their last 7 when hosting the Grizzlies, they’ve also won 12 of 14 games overall.
The buzz around Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies seems to be growing by the day and for good reason. Morant is playing like a superstar in only his 3rd season and he is already an MVP candidate. His case for winning the award has only gone up since the all-star break as he had 2 masterful performance against the Bulls and Spurs.
In the win over San Antonio he became the first ever Memphis player to score 50 points in an NBA game, if he can continue playing like this in coming weeks he might actually have a shot at winning the award over Embiid.
Memphis is currently 3rd in the West, just a half game behind the 2nd placed Warriors and with Golden State losing their last 2 games it isn’t out of the question that Memphis leaps over them soon. The Grizzlies are one of the most reliable teams when it comes to covering the spread. On the road this season they are 23-9 ATS.
Without the injured Brown I’m not feeling the Celtics here, even though they’ve been on a solid run lately. He just means too much to them, on both ends of the floor. I just don’t see how they contain Morant, I’m going with the road squad in this one.
Boston Celtics vs Memphis Grizzlies Predictions & Odds
Memphis has gone over the total in more games than not on the road this season with their record sitting at 17-13-2 on the O/U. The total has gone over in 8 of their last 11 overall and in 10 of their last 15 vs Atlantic Division opponents. Boston has also had a solid run of games finishing over the total with that being the case in 5 of their last 6.
If we look at just head-to-head meetings we see that the over has cashed in 9 of the last 12 games and in the last 10 these 2 teams have averaged 222.6 points per game between them. With the absence of Brown I expect the Celtics defense to take a hit, they just allowed 128 points to an Indiana Pacers team a couple of games ago.
Memphis is averaging 117.6 points per game over their last 5 outings, with Ja Morant playing the way he is right now I’d say that number is doable even against a top 2 defense like the one the Celtics have. Let’s back the points in this one.
