Brooklyn Nets
It wasn’t the home debut Kyrie Irving was hoping it would be as the Nets lost 119-110 to the Charlotte Hornets over the weekend. Kyrie played one of his worst games of the season shooting wise going just 6-for-22 from the field and as a team the Nets were cold from three-point land connecting on just 20.6% of their shots.
They also couldn’t do much against the red-hot Hornets who drained 17 of 32 shots from the perimeter, that was a big warning sign for this Nets team ahead of the playoffs. Speaking of the playoffs, Brooklyn still hasn’t guaranteed a spot in them. They are 8th in the standings at the moment, 3 games back from the 7th seeded Cavs who they would face in a play-in tournament game as things stand. Against tonight’s opponent the Pistons they’ve won 8 of 10 meetings and are 5-0 SU in the last 5 meetings at home.
Detroit Pistons
The Pistons are 20-55 for the season, good enough for only the 14th seed in the East, half a game above the last placed Orlando Magic. Although they’ve been playing poorly all season long, bettors have really enjoyed their run against the spread recently as this team has gone 14-2-2 ATS in their last 18 games. It gets even better in games vs Eastern Conference opponents as they’ve covered in 10 of 11 such games and tonight they are 13.5 point underdogs.
Against the Nets they’ve covered in 4 of 6 meetings and have lost only once this season by more than 13.5 points against them. They’ll have to cope tonight without their biggest star though, Jerami Grant has been ruled out for the season with a calf injury, so it’ll be up to rookie sensation Cade Cunningham to lead the way. Over his last 8 games he is averaging 21.1 points and 7.9 assists per game on solid shooting from the field.
I really like the Nets in this spot, but it’s not easy blowing teams out nowadays in the NBA. Detroit doesn’t have much to play for, but they are a young and hungry team that doesn’t like losing all that much. Their last 4 losses have been by 2, 3, 4 and 4 points, so I expect them to put up resistance here. Ultimately the Nets win, but let’s back to Detroit to cover.

Especially since the Pistons have gone under in 9 of their last 13 games, including 6 of their last 9 vs Atlantic Division opponents.
Losing Jerami Grant is a big deal to them, he is averaging 19.2 points per game this season which leads the team in scoring. Other players such as Saddiq Bey and Marvin Bagley III will have to pick up the slack if the Pistons want to stay competitive here. In their last 2 games this team has scored just 102 and 97 points, so that’s concerning. When a team scores 110 points in 2 straight, it might sound weird to say they are struggling offensively, but the Nets have so much more potential on offence than that.
However, in home games they are just 16-20 on the O/U this season and with the 3 meetings against Detroit this season averaging just 204.6 points per game, I think backing the under is the safer bet here, so let’s go with that.
